Interesting stats on EVs and energy use in the US, developments in wind and tidal power, a plastic recycling microfactory, and an "unprecedented collapse" in EU fossil fuel generation.
We humans are a species on the move. We always have been! We’ve sailed oceans, climbed mountains, traversed entire continents, and refused to let the planet’s gravity stop us from flying to the moon just to say we could. And from outrigger canoes to steam-powered locomotives to the reusable rockets space companies use these days to carry things into orbit, the transportation vehicles we have created are brilliant works of engineering.
AND, as you probably know, the ones we use most often these days are a huge source of pollution and CO2. According to the EPA, transportation is responsible for 29% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the USA (and probably similar in Canada) which is why there is such a huge push toward moving away from fossil-fuel powered cars as the main transportation paradigm as quickly as we possibly can.
The amazing news is, there are so many incredible electric vehicles coming available that are likely to completely transform what transportation will look like in the decades to come. We’re not just talking about standard car-type vehicles, either. Ebikes, e-scooters, trikes, and mini-cars are coming available that are cheaper than you might think and cost nothing to run. And best of all they’re super fun to ride!
Imagine cities with fewer roads and more bike trails lined with trees, leading to public transportation options such as trains, light rail, or even fleets of self-driving cars to facilitate longer distance intra- or inter-city travel.
(And don’t get me started about solar-powered boats or hydrogen planes!)
For too long our city-scapes have been dominated by cars. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could take back some of those roads and parking lots and use that liberated space to create a healthier environment for all of us?
Here are some of the Awesome Transportation topics to consider as we create our shared vision of what our future could look like. Which ideas would you love to incorporate in YOUR Awesome Future?
