Why Our Future Will Be AWESOME

According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of “awesome” is:

Extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.

There's really no better way to describe the future we will most likely experience in the decades to come.  

It will no doubt be extremely impressive, in all sorts of horrifying, awe-inspiring, and heart-wrenching ways.

It will be daunting.

There will be events that inspire great admiration – and events that inspire great apprehension or fear.

Life is all the things, all the time.

We will experience moments of incomprehensible tragedy – and incomparable joy.

Just as we always have.

We will see massive human migrations all around the globe and experience huge shifts in how we live our lives, both politically and socially.  

We’ll spend way too much time arguing with each other over ridiculous things instead of working together to overcome our challenges.

AND we just might possibly come together in community and solve some seemingly insurmountable problems.

We can find new ways of doing things.

Just as we always have.

We can figure out better ways to meet our needs and make our lives easier and more fulfilling.

We can expand our circle of empathy to include a much larger, more diverse definition of “us.”

Enemies can become friends and friends can become family.

Systems can be transformed. Belief systems can evolve.

Just as they always have.

WE have the power to shape our future.

But first we have to imagine it.

No matter how angry and hopeless you may sometimes feel about the state of the world, remember this.  We have more power than most of us realize!

We have the tools and know-how *right now* to make enormous strides toward creating a sustainable society where people everywhere have everything they need to thrive – and humans and nature exist in more harmonious equilibrium.

All we need is a shared vision and the willpower to make it happen.

That’s what Our Awesome Future is all about:

Shining a spotlight on the ideas and developments that are happening today that could play a role in creating a future in which all of us can thrive and be happy.

(And "all of us" means ALL OF US – not only humans but the animals, plants, and ecosystems that together comprise this miraculous entity known as life on planet Earth. We are all entangled and interconnected, and what affects some of us impacts all of us, whether we realize it or not.)

The goal of this website is to get more people thinking and talking about the kind of shared future we actually WANT to create in the decades to come – and the ideas, technologies, and possible solutions people are developing *right now* that could help us make that shared future a reality.

Because the first step toward developing a collective idea of what our awesome future could look like is to start thinking and talking about it.

We create the future we envision.

So instead of focusing all of our attention on the problems we dread MOST and the future we want LEAST, let’s start imagining a future that works for all of us.

Because the better life is for everyone, the better life is for EVERYONE.
