The advancements in solar-cell technology in the past few years have been nothing short of amazing. It will be interesting to see where the tech will be 10 years from now...
Scientists in China and the Netherlands say they have collaborated to create solar cells that are made of the same material as 95% of current solar cells but have 26.81% efficiency. This represents a 1.5% increase in conversion efficiency compared to existing solar-cell technology – which might not seem like a lot but could make a significant difference in performance.
According to this TechExplore article, the new solar cell uses a "nanocrystalline-silicon hole contact layer" that can transfer electricity with far less resistance and results in a higher power conversion efficiency.
